Typically, your physicians will examine you, consider your symptoms and medical history, then ask for one or more diagnostic tests based on what they think may be the nature of your illness.

The goal of these tests is to identify your illness with as much precision as possible. You and your doctor need the most complete and accurate information possible to plan your course of treatment. Many decisions - including whether surgery is needed - may be based on the results of your diagnostic testing.
