Resources for Managing Diabetes - "Free" Foods


"Free" foods are those that provide only 5 grams of carbohydrates, or 20 calories or less per serving. You are allowed up to three servings of "free" foods each day, but not all at the same time.

"Free" Food Serving Size
Candy - hard or Dum Dum lollipop 1
Candy - Hershey's kiss or hug 1-2
Candy - Smarties 1 roll
Cereal, dry - Cheerios, Chex or Kix 1/4 cup
Cheese - string 1
Crackers - Goldfish 15
Crackers - Graham 1 square
Crackers - Oyster 15-20
Crackers - Saltines 2
Dill pickle 1 1/2 large
Ham or turkey "roll-up" 1 slice
Jello - sugar free no limit
Popcorn 1 cup
Soda - sugar free no limit
Vegetables - raw or salad 1 cup

 

Please call the office if your child/teen seems to need more than three servings of free foods each day or wants larger servings. The meal plan may need to be adjusted.
