The History of Golisano Children's Hospital at Strong
The 1980s
This was a time of immense growth within the Department
of Pediatrics. Full-time faculty increased from 52 to 92 and
house staff increased from 56 to 74. The department budget grew
from $9.5 million to $28.3 million, and research funding grew
from $3.1 million to $11.4 million. The National Institutes of
Health ranked the department and the children's hospital as 21st
in the nation among pediatric departments and children's hospitals
receiving federal grant support, and 4th in the nation in federal
teaching-grant support. In addition, income from clinical practice
nearly tripled from $2.7 million to $7.5 million (per Rochester
Pediatrics, published 2000).
1983
Dr. Robert A. Hoekelman (Columbia)
became the fifth Chair of the Department of Pediatrics, serving
until 1993.
Prior
to his appointment, Dr. Hoekelman practiced as a general
pediatrician for twelve
years
before joining
the faculty in 1967 as the director of ambulatory pediatrics.
He founded the Department's Division of General Pediatrics and
its General
Pediatrics
Academic
Fellowship
Training Program.
1989
The Strong Children's Research Center
was established with the purpose of bringing together all
University of
Rochester
faculty engaged in research directed to the causes, prevention,
and treatment of diseases of infants, children, and adolescents
in order to collaborate in their research and in the training
of future physician scientists.
