Golisano Children's Hospital at Strong

"Our goal is to care for children without taking away the joy they have."

The Pediatric Hematology / Oncology Division at Golisano Children's Hospital is a National Leader in Designing Successful Treatment Options for Children With Cancer

As an active member of the National Children's Oncology Group and the Dana Farber Cancer Institute Leukemia Consortium, Golisano Children's Hospital contributes to the development of the newest medications and therapies available to treat childhood cancer. From this rich store of knowledge, the hospital is particularly aggressive and successful in individualizing treatment plans to limit both short- and long-term effects from radiation, chemotherapies, and other treatments.

Staff Credentials are Superior

Even a brief look at the credentials of staff members in the Pediatric Hematology / Oncology Division at Golisano Children's Hospital underscores the expertise available here. The hospital has nine board-certified pediatric hematologist / oncologists, including the physician who developed a protocol for the treatment of T-cell leukemia and lymphoma, now followed by 100 hospitals nationwide. Another physician is a nationally recognized expert on brain tumors.

The medical director of the hospital's Comprehensive Hemoglobinopathy Program is also on the Hematology / Oncology team. Through this leading-edge program, a collaboration with regional physicians has been developed to provide tertiary care and screening for patients with diseases such as sickle cell anemia and thalassemia. Yet another physician-led team uses its extensive knowledge in the hospital's Long-Term Follow-up Clinic, where more than 400 cancer survivors receive continuing evaluation and expert care.

A Multi-faceted Team Encourages and Supports Children and Their Families

Completing the circle of experienced support for children and their families are:
a behavioral pediatrician, eight pediatric nurse practitioners, child life specialists, a nutritionist, social workers, an education liaison, and two parent advocates. This team helps children and families maintain equilibrium through the difficult days of diagnosis, treatment, and recovery. As Dr. David Korones, director of the Comprehensive Brain Tumor Clinic, puts it so aptly: "Our aim is to care for children with cancer without taking away the joy they have in just being a kid."
