Keeping Kids Safe

Age-Specific Safety Tips

School-age Safety Tips

girl showing her report cardEver since he/she uttered that first "no!" and took his/her first clumsy step away from your loving arms, your child has been striving for independence. Heading off to school is a significant milestone in that pursuit. While your child no longer needs a parent's watchful eye over every movement, he/she is still depending on you to provide a safe environment and guidelines for his/her growing independence.

To protect your school-age child (age 5-12):

  • Continue to follow car safety guidelines appropriate for your child's age and size.
  • Inform your child concerning school bus safety and bicycle safety.
  • Know the safe way to participate in organized sports. Learn how to play it safe.
  • Continue to follow general home safety guidelines.
  • Practice internet safety.
  • Practice gun safety.
  • Teach your child to swim, and practice water safety.
  • Teach your child fire safety, and make sure the whole family knows what to do in case of a fire.
  • Make sure your child is aware of "stranger danger" and knows the difference between "good touch" and "bad touch".
