  • Neurolinguistics—how the brain works to produce or support consciousness, judgment, insight, reasoning, language, and other higher cognitive functions
  • Cognitive neuroscience—investigating how reading is affected in normal aging and Alzheimer’s disease and examining how theoretical linguistic phenomena (such as raising, tough movement, and past-tense organization) are affected by cortical and subcortical neurodegenerative disease
  • End-of-life care in dementia— studying the special needs of patients with cognitive impairment at the end of life
  • Neuroethics—studying ethical questions increasing in neurology because of the rapid development of treatments for neurological conditions
  • Evaluating neurologic education

Academic Activity

  • Teaching medical students, residents, and other physicians about neurology in general and cognitive neurology
  • Teaching in the annual medical school neuroscience course “Mind, Brain, & Behavior”
