Dementia is among the most common causes of cognitive disorders, and Alzheimer’s disease is the most common form of dementia in the United States. There are many other causes of dementia and cognitive impairment, however. Proper evaluation and diagnosis is critical for determining prognosis and possible treatments, as well as identifying preventable or reversible causes of cognitive impairment. These patients are seen primarily at Monroe Community Hospital.
Geriatric neurology is an evolving subspecialty of neurologic practice focused on the evaluation and treatment of older adults. This is the result of growing recognition that neurological conditions may present differently in middle or late life, and that the older adult may require different treatments than younger patients. These patients are seen primarily in the Neurology Clinic at Highland Hospital.
