Research and Clinical Trials Overview
Presently, we are participating in a national, multicenter
research study: A Multicenter Study of the Outcomes of Epilepsy
Surgery.
We also have several clinical trials underway.
Research is a vital part of the Strong Epilepsy Center (SEC).
Our research involves both basic scientists and clinicians.
We have three major goals:
The Strong Epilepsy Center is part of the academic organization
of the University of Rochester. We are directly involved in
teaching medical students, graduate students and residents.
We have clinical fellowships for neurologists who seek advanced
training to become specialists in epilepsy. We have research
fellowships for neuroscientists for pre-doctoral and post-doctoral
training. In particular, we encourage individuals who would
like to combine research with clinical expertise. Additionally,
we give an annual course for community physicians and other
health care workers who are interested in the primary care
of people with epilepsy.
We strive to deliver the most advanced treatment currently
available, while looking for new and better treatment. The
ultimate goal of our research is the prevention of epilepsy.
Funding for our research has come from grants from the National
Institutes of Health, the American Epilepsy Foundation, and
the Stanley H. and Rita J. Kaplan Foundation.
