Developmental Disabilities

Older adults with developmental disabilities are living longer, healthier lives because of better health care, improved nutrition, and other health risk-reducing strategies. For example, in 1970, only about 11% of the adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities (I/DD) in this country were over age 55. Projections indicate that by the year 2040, that percentage will double. Strong Health will be there, understanding the challenges in delivering health care and responding with real help.

The Center for Developmental Disabilities

The University of Rochester’s Program in Aging and Developmental Disabilities's (PADD) goal is to help educate people about older people with developmental disabilities. PADD provides environmental assessments, an established clinic, and leading-edge conferences and seminars on a wide variety of topics related to the aging developmentally disabled adult.

PADD's activities include:

  • Conferences. PADD sponsors conferences in various places on a long list of related topics including pain management, osteoporosis, and incontinence in the I/DD population.
  • Curriculum. Currently PADD offers a pair of CDs with accompanying support materials, “Understanding Aging and Developmental Disabilities” Part 1 ($55) and Part 2 ($45) and an informative booklet authored by the faculty, “Intellectual Abilities: A Caretaker’s Guide to Age and Dementia” ($25).
  • Clinical Assessments. The Rochester Master Clinical Assessment Training Institute was developed to help clinicians and caregivers better understand the medical aspects of aging with pre-existing disabilities and disorders. Designed especially for health care providers, universities, and interested organizations, PADD's two-part assessment training program is offered at their convenience.
  • Developmental Disabilities Certificate Program. To support the education and career advancement of people working in developmental disabilities, PADD offers a certificate program through SUNY College at Brockport. A variety of courses are available for credit.
