Renovascular Conditions

What are Renovascular Conditions?

Renovascular conditions are disorders that cause the blood vessels (veins or arteries) of the kidneys to be narrowed or blocked. This narrowing is usually caused by atherosclerosis ( "hardening of the arteries" ) or by the presence of scar tissue from an injury or renal artery stenosis (abnormal tissue growth in the artery to the kidney).

Symptoms of Renovascular Conditions

Usually the narrowing of a renal artery progresses slowly and shows few symptoms other high blood pressure.

If occlusion (blockage) occurs suddenly symptoms may include:

  • Pain on the sides of the abdomen, legs, or thighs
  • Blood in the urine
  • Kidney becomes enlarged
  • Fever, nausea, and vomiting
  • High blood pressure

Diagnosing Renovascular Conditions

Diagnosing conditions of the veins

Renal vein thrombosis (a blood clot that has dislodged from its origin and is traveling through the bloodstream) is often first indicated by doppler ultrasound testing. When doppler ultrasound shows the possibility of a thrombosis the following imaging tests may be performed to locate the clot:

Diagnosing conditions of the Arteries

The presence of blocked (occluded) arteries will be shown in through blood and urine tests. The blockage or narrowing (stenosis) of a renal artery can be located with the following tests:

Treatment Options

Renal vein thrombosis is treated with medication, usually:

  • Anticoagulants - heparin and warfarin

Renal artery blockage may be treated with:

  • Clot-dissolving procedure - a local intra-arterial infusion of clot-dissolving medication
  • Angioplasty
  • Bypass surgery
  • High blood pressure medication
