Benefits of Laparoscopic Prostatectomy

View a webcast of a pre-recorded Robotic Laparoscopic Prostatectomy and read a transcript from our web chat with surgeon, Dr. Jean Joseph.

Laparoscopic prostatectomy has been shown to be as effective in removing cancer as traditional surgery. The operation can take three to five hours, which is longer than traditional surgery. But it does offer many benefits. Patients generally have significantly

  • Fewer complications
  • Less pain after surgery
  • Less blood loss
    • During surgery, gas is used to inflate the abdomen; the pressure of the gas compresses the veins of the pelvis, so they bleed less during surgery.
  • Shorter hospital stays
    • Hospital stays depend on the unique, individual situation and therefore always vary, but:
most men can return home after two nights, some after one night
  • Shorter recovery time
    • Generally a few days compared to four to six weeks for traditional surgery
    • Usually, patients return to normal physical activity within the first week after surgery
    • Vigorous physical activity should be avoided for three weeks
    • Often, patients can have the catheter removed as soon as four days after surgery, thought it may remain for up to two weeks
