Urology Residency Training Program

University of Rochester School of Medicine and Dentistry

Program Outline—Third Year (PGY-4)

The third year (PGY-4) of training is dedicated largely to research and is an integral part of the department’s clinical and basic research programs. During the PGY-3 year, each resident develops a research proposal that is presented to the Chairman and Program Director.  A faculty mentor is also identified for the project.  Recent residents have spent their research time involved with basic science experiments, clinical trials, and translational research.  An excellent research staff is available to support the studies underway. There is close collaboration between the departments of Pathology, Medicine, Community and Preventive Medicine, the Cancer Center and Urology, among others. Presentations based on accepted abstracts are made at both regional and national meetings of the American Urological Association (AUA).

Throughout the year, one morning per week, the PGY-4 residents are responsible for the urologic care of patients at Monroe Community Hospital, a municipal hospital with acute and chronic care missions.  Research residents also maintain a continuity clinic for their own PGY-3 resident clinic patients, one half-day per month.

Each research resident is on call 3 times per month and is expected to attend all urology didactic sessions and teaching conferences.
