Ronald Rabinowitz, M.D.
Associate chair of the urology department and chief of pediatric
urology at Strong Hospital, Dr. Rabinowitz’s interest in
pediatric medicine stems from his own childhood as an asthma
sufferer. “I spent a lot time in the hospital on the respiratory
floor,” he says, “so I always knew if I was going
to be in medicine, I would work with kids.”
He always introduces himself to his patient – the child – first. “When
you deal with children,” he says, “you try to be on their level,
look at things from their perspective, think about what they’re afraid
of. I use language they and their parents can understand. I ask them if they
know why they’re in my office, what their problem is, and reassure them
that it will be ok. The more the kids know, the less they’re afraid.”
What makes pediatric urology especially exciting for him is that because the patients are so young, “you’re looking for long term answers. Your patients have, you hope, another seventy-five or more years ahead of them and you want what you do to last.”
He’s proud of the fact that patients come to Strong from “Syracuse, Buffalo, and around the state. Outside of New York City, we have the state’s largest, busiest, most experienced and most academically productive pediatric urology division. We’re a tightly knit department. We all consult with each other, talk about our patients with each other, help each other when we can.”
As dedicated as he is to his patients, Dr. Rabinowitz understands the need to spend some time on things completely outside of medicine. For example, he’s always had a strong interest in archeology. In fact, he spent ten summers in Israel as associate director of the University of Rochester’s excavation program there, which became the subject of a recent PBS documentary.
