Gynecology

Common Procedures

Gynecology procedures can be divided into three categories:

There are also different methods for doing many procedures. For pelvic procedures these include different ways for doctors to access organs and tissues:

  • Endoscopic surgery In laparoscopic surgery, one or more very small incisions are made in the abdomen.
  • Hysteroscopic procedures. Access is achieved through the vagina and cervix (the neck of the uterus at the end of the vaginal canal). More information.
  • Laparotomy. Conventional surgery (also called cold knife surgery) which is done with an incision through the abdomen. More information

Additionally, depending on circumstances procedures may be performed with a wide variety of energy sources, including:

  • Heat (electrosurgery or diathermy)
  • Cold (cryosurgery)
  • Laser
  • Ultrasonic vibration (Harmonic scalpel)

We’ll always recommend the least invasive procedure that can still deliver the optimal outcome for you.
