Sexual Health

Have you ever had a question about sexual health or sexually transmitted diseases? Did you discuss it with your doctor? If your answer to the former is “yes” and the latter is “no” then you’re in the majority of adult women who wonder and, maybe, even worry in silence.

A national survey reported in a February issue of “The Journal of the American Medical Association” revealed that 43% of women have experienced sexual dysfunction. The problems they reported included:

  • Low sexual desire (22%)
  • Problems with arousal (14%)
  • Pain during intercourse (7%)

Yet, doctors tell us that few of their patients bring up issues of sexuality with them.

So, we’re dedicating this section of our Women’s Health web site to topics that we hope will answer some of your questions… but, more importantly, to help you feel better able to have a dialog about sexuality concerns with your doctor.

While concerns about sexual functioning can stem from emotional as well as physical causes, your primary care doctor and gynecologist are good places to start. They can check out possible medical causes, provide counsel and give you a referral to a specialist if necessary.
